  • Environmental management standards

As a system of structures it controls, reviews mechanisms, and continuous improvement. Rather than prescribing point solutions, ISO 42001 mandates that organizations formalize processes covering the entire AI lifecycle—from planning and risk assessment to deployment, monitoring, and eventual decommissioning. Key themes include leadership commitment, clear roles and responsibilities, resource allocation, data and model quality controls, performance evaluation, and continual improvement. 

Because ISO 42001 is a certifiable standard, organizations can seek external validation (audit) of their AI governance practices. This appeals particularly to firms that already align with ISO systems (e.g. ISO 27001 for security) and want to embed AI oversight into their broader compliance ecosystem. In practice, ISO 42001 is often viewed as a governance backbone, one that can help organizations prepare for or align with regulation (e.g. the EU AI Act), without substituting for legal obligations. 

One interesting aspect is how ISO 42001 overlaps with the EU AI Act—analysts estimate perhaps 40–50% overlap in key control areas (data governance, human oversight, traceability). This overlap makes ISO 42001 attractive for organizations seeking to proactively build regulatory resilience, though ISO compliance alone does not satisfy all legal mandates under the AI Act.

EU Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act)

The EU AI Act is a landmark regulation that carries binding force in the European Union. It classifies AI systems by risk level—minimal, limited, high, and unacceptable—and attaches varying obligations depending on the tier. Systems deemed unacceptable risk (eg: manipulative social scoring systems) are banned outright, while high-risk AI (which includes hiring algorithms, education, credit scoring, healthcare) is subject to strict conformity requirements. These include:

  • Rigorous documentation, 
  • Logging, transparency, 
  • Human oversight, 
  • Model validation, 
  • Risk mitigation and 
  • Post-market monitoring. 

The EU AI Act is not simply advisory; it imposes penalties for noncompliance and demands that providers of high-risk AI perform conformity assessments before putting systems into service. Because hiring algorithms often qualify as high-risk under this legislation, organizations using AI in recruitment must pay particular attention to these rules. 

That said, parts of the Act roll out over time (a phased implementation), so organizations must track deadlines and transitional obligations. One benefit of the Act is that it pushes firms from best-effort ethics to formal compliance, raising the baseline for AI safety across the region. However, because the Act is prescriptive, companies must interpret its obligations in their contexts — meaning that simply following ISO or NIST frameworks may not fully satisfy the law. 

G7 Code of Conduct for Advanced AI (2023)

Unlike the previous three, the G7 Code of Conduct for Advanced AI is a voluntary international agreement rather than a regulation or standard. It was adopted by G7 nations to encourage shared norms around trustworthy AI, particularly in generative and frontier systems. The code outlines a set of principles (often enumerated as 11) focused on transparency, safety, human oversight, risk assessment, and responsible publishing of capabilities and limitations.

Because it is non-binding, the G7 Code doesn’t carry penalties or certification requirements. But its value lies in soft influence: it helps align national AI policies and offers a shared benchmark for organizations operating across borders. Especially for companies working with advanced models, the G7 Code can serve as a normative compass, guiding decisions in areas that newer or less regulated domains may leave ambiguous.
