Reviewed October 19, 2026 · BEON.tech publishes this guide and is one of the companies listed. No company paid to be included, and the methodology is at the end.
The best sites to hire AI engineers in 2026 fall into five groups:
- Vetted freelance networks such as Toptal and Arc.dev, which are the fastest way to bring in a specialist for a defined project.
- Open marketplaces such as Upwork, which suit small tasks you can vet yourself.
- Talent platforms such as Index.dev and Andela, which offer contract engineers, managed teams or a path to direct hire.
- Nearshore staff augmentation firms such as BEON.tech, BairesDev and Revelo, which give you full-time AI engineers who work in hours that overlap with yours.
- Specialist recruiters such as Harnham, for a permanent hire on your own payroll.
Which one fits depends less on the brand than on a question most roundups skip. Who actually employs the engineer?
That question shapes your cost, your legal exposure and how long the person stays. This guide answers it for each of the 11 companies below. It also compares pricing, talent location, review evidence and how each company says it tests AI skills.

Choose the hiring model before you choose the vendor
Two companies on this list can both claim the “top 1%” and still give you completely different experiences. Usually the difference comes from the hiring model.
- Open marketplace. On Upwork you find, screen and manage a freelancer yourself. It’s the cheapest way in and often the fastest. It works for a prototype, an internal automation or a one-off integration. It works less well once the work touches production data or needs someone around in six months.
- Vetted freelance network. Toptal, Arc.dev, Lemon.io and Proxify screen candidates for you and handle payments. The engineer is still an independent contractor, often with other clients. Billing is usually hourly. Some platforms offer a trial: Toptal gives up to two weeks, Proxify one. Ask what it costs to hire the person full time later, because those terms vary.
- Talent platform or managed team. Index.dev places contract engineers and offers a direct-hire option. Andela can add individuals to your team or run a fully managed one. Both suit companies that want structure without building a hiring pipeline of their own.
- Nearshore staff augmentation. BEON.tech, BairesDev and Revelo place engineers who work full time inside your team, on your tools, in your standups. The vendor takes care of payroll and compliance in the engineer’s country, and you pay a predictable monthly rate. The employment structure isn’t identical across vendors, though. Revelo, for example, says it acts as agent of record for independent contractors. This model fits long-running AI product work, where the engineer needs months to learn your codebase and your data.
- Specialist recruiter. Through a firm like Harnham, the engineer becomes your employee and you pay a placement fee. It’s the right call when you want a permanent U.S. hire and already run payroll, benefits and retention programs.
The employment question carries extra weight in AI work. AI engineers often hold production data, model API keys and customer information. Your security review, your IP assignment and your offboarding process all depend on whose contract the engineer signed. Long, full-time engagements with contractors also carry misclassification risk, which our guide to contractor vs. EOR explains in more detail.

The companies, grouped by hiring model
Vetted freelance networks and marketplaces
Toptal
Toptal places independent contractors on hourly, part-time or full-time engagements and handles billing and NDAs on your behalf. It says it accepts the “top 3%” of applicants and publishes pass rates for each of its five screening stages, which few competitors do. New engagements come with a trial of up to two weeks.

Toptal doesn’t publish rates for AI engineers. Its Clutch profile lists a self-reported band of $100 to $149 an hour. Clients rate it 4.8 from 53 reviews there, and the reviews we read praised talent quality and account managers. Cost was the most consistent complaint.
Worth checking: the actual hourly rate for LLM or agent profiles, the candidate’s time zone, and the terms for converting a contractor to full time.
Arc.dev
Arc.dev combines freelance contractors with full-time hiring, which it runs through employer-of-record partners Deel and Remote. Its pricing is unusually open. Freelance LLM developers “typically charge between $60-100+/hour,” and full-time hires run “around $70-100 per hour.”
Arc says freelancers can be matched in roughly 72 hours and full-time hires closed in about 14 days. Profiles on its LLM page mention RAG, LangChain and vector databases. Client-side reputation is harder to judge. We found no Clutch profile, and the Trustpilot reviews we read (4.4 from 196) were written by developers rather than hiring companies.
Worth checking: the contract-to-hire fee (it exists, but the amount isn’t listed) and client references.
Upwork
Upwork is an open marketplace. You contract directly with freelancers or agencies, by the hour or for a fixed price. According to Upwork, the average cost of AI developers “typically ranges from $30-$150 per hour,” and its help center puts the client marketplace fee at “up to 7.99%.” Eligible U.S. bank-account payers get a reduced 3%.

Upwork doesn’t run a platform-level AI skills test, so screening is your job and quality varies widely. Its Trustpilot score of 3.9 from about 12,600 reviews mostly reflects freelancers’ experience, not buyers’.
Worth checking: IP and confidentiality terms with each freelancer.
Lemon.io
Lemon.io supplies vetted contractors on full-time or part-time terms and handles contracts and monthly payouts. Its AI page covers AI engineers, LLM developers, ML engineers and MLOps engineers, with tags for RAG, LangGraph and agent development. It promises “2-3 expertly matched candidates within 24-48 hours.”

The pricing is confusing. The same page shows $73 an hour in a calculator, $61 to $80 in a range and $41 to $60 in the FAQ, so get a written quote. Independent client evidence is thin. Two of the three reviews on its Clutch profile appear to describe a different company.
Proxify
Proxify places contracted developers, with a minimum of 40 hours a month, and lets you move them onto your own payroll later. It publishes an entry rate “from $33.90/hr” and offers a one-week trial. Its talent is mostly European, so overlap with U.S. Pacific hours can be limited.

Proxify has no Clutch reviews yet. Most of the Trustpilot reviews we read (4.4 from 331) came from clients, who mentioned speed and match quality. One inconsistency to note: the site describes its acceptance rate as both “around 1%” and “around 2-3%.”
Talent platforms and managed teams
Index.dev
Index.dev gives you three options: month-to-month contract engineers, direct hire for a one-time fee, or a full project pod. Its talent comes from Latin America and Central and Eastern Europe. The AI page is one of the more specific on this list. It names LLM work, RAG pipelines, autonomous agents, MLOps tooling such as Kubeflow, MLflow and Ray, fine-tuning and AI security.

The 30-day risk-free trial is the longest we found. Rates aren’t published. On Clutch, Index.dev scores 4.9 from 18 client reviews. Reviewers mention fast placement for rare skills, and one wanted more structured onboarding check-ins.
Andela
Andela can add AI engineers to your team or deploy a fully managed one, usually under an enterprise master services agreement. Its AI page describes engineer cohorts released quarterly and trained in four tracks: LLM engineering, agentic AI, AI in production, and AI leadership and strategy. It also sorts engineers into three archetypes, from building AI product features to integrating models into enterprise systems to running them in production. The company acquired Woven for technical assessments.

What Andela doesn’t publish is just as relevant: pricing, time-to-match, and whether its engineers are contractors or employees. G2 shows a 4.7 rating, although different G2 pages report different review counts (110 and 1,536), and tags like “Salary Issues” suggest some reviewers are talent rather than clients. We couldn’t load a Clutch profile.
Nearshore AI engineer staffing
BEON.tech
BEON.tech places full-time engineers from Latin America into U.S. teams through staff augmentation, contract-to-hire or direct hire. In staff augmentation, BEON.tech finds, hires, equips and pays the engineer and handles benefits and compliance. Each engineer also works with a Talent Experience Manager™ whose job is engagement and retention.

Pricing is published. Senior engineers cost “$6,000–$8,000 per month,” all-inclusive, with no upfront recruitment fee and no replacement fees during the engagement, and the pricing page notes that a senior AI engineer from Brazil “reaches $8,000/month.” BEON.tech’s published AI work is narrower than a specialist firm’s. Its case study is a React engineer placed in three weeks on Superhuman’s AI team, where he contributed to AI initiatives including the product’s text-composition experience. On Clutch, BEON.tech scores 4.9 from 70 client reviews, most often tagged “timely” and “high-quality work.”
Best for U.S. teams building AI features into an existing product who want a full-time nearshore AI engineer working U.S.-aligned hours. See BEON.tech’s AI engineer staffing, and ask for specifics on the LLM features each candidate has shipped to production.
BairesDev
BairesDev describes its AI engineers as “full-time team members.” You can hire them individually through staff augmentation or as a delivery pod led by a BairesDev project manager. Its AI page covers fine-tuning LLMs, RAG pipelines, MLOps on Kubeflow, SageMaker and Vertex AI, and distributed training. AI agents aren’t mentioned.

Rates aren’t published. Clients rate BairesDev 4.9 from 63 reviews on Clutch, mostly for responsiveness and how well engineers fit into existing teams, with a few mentions of early developer churn. Ask how deep its LLM bench runs compared with classic ML, and whether a minimum engagement applies.
Revelo
Revelo places full-time Latin American engineers on month-to-month terms with no placement fee. Payroll, benefits and compliance in 18 countries run through its PEO infrastructure. Its AI page lists RAG pipelines, LLM integration, evaluation and guardrails, and vector search.

Revelo publishes all-in monthly bands, which is useful. The senior band reads “$7,200–$10,700,” but the same page also shows a senior range of roughly $11,900 to $17,000, so confirm which applies. There’s a 14-day risk-free trial. Client reviews are scarce. Clutch shows a single review, and the G2 reviews we read came mostly from talent.
AI engineer recruiting firms
Harnham
Harnham is a recruitment firm focused on AI and data. Its U.S. offices include New York, Phoenix and San Francisco, and it handles permanent placement, contract recruiting and executive search. Its pages cover GenAI engineers, ML engineers, MLOps and ML platform engineers, NLP and LLM specialists, and AI architects.

Neither fees nor time-to-hire are published. We found no Clutch profile, and the Trustpilot reviews we read came almost entirely from candidates, so they say little about the client experience. Ask for the placement fee percentage, the guarantee period and two client references before you start.
A note on Turing. Some 2026 roundups still recommend Turing for hiring AI developers. When we checked on October 19, 2026, its generative AI hiring page redirected to an expert network serving frontier AI labs, and we couldn’t find a current offer for adding AI engineers to a company’s own team. That’s why it isn’t listed here.
How to test AI engineering skills, whichever channel you use
Nearly every vendor claims a tiny acceptance rate. Very few explain how they test AI skills specifically. Whatever route you take, run an exercise that looks like the real job, or ask the vendor to show you theirs.
Start with a small build. Hand the candidate a handful of documents and ask for a retrieval-augmented answer, plus a way to measure whether it’s correct. Strong candidates bring up chunking, retrieval quality and an evaluation set before they bring up the model. (Our explainer on RAG, fine-tuning and agents covers the vocabulary.)
Then ask how they’d know a prompt change made things better. You’re listening for golden datasets, regression tests and some healthy skepticism about using an LLM as a judge. If you’re hiring LLM engineers or AI agent developers, give them a tool-calling flow that fails and watch them debug it, because the way they isolate the failure tells you more than any whiteboard question. Production-minded engineers will raise token costs, caching, prompt injection and data leakage without being asked.
From the vendor, ask who designed the AI exercise, whether it’s specific to LLM work, and whether you can see the scorecard or the interview recording. For a fuller framework, see our guide to evaluating AI-first engineers.
You may realize along the way that you need MLOps depth (model serving, pipelines, monitoring) rather than application AI. Index.dev, BairesDev and Lemon.io name MLOps or LLMOps explicitly, and Andela has a dedicated “AI in production” training track. If the work is embedded with customers to deploy a product, the role you want is probably a forward deployed engineer.
How much AI engineers cost in 2026
Levels.fyi puts median total compensation for U.S. AI engineers at $154,000 a year. The 25th percentile is $110,000, the 75th $213,000 and the 90th $280,000 (updated October 19, 2026). The median works out to roughly $12,800 a month before benefits, payroll taxes, equipment and any recruiting fee.
Here is what the companies above publish, converted to a monthly figure where needed. The conversions assume 160 hours a month and are our estimate.
| Model | Example | Published rate | Approximate monthly cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open marketplace | Upwork | $30–$150/hr, plus up to 7.99% client fee | $4,800–$24,000, plus fee |
| Vetted freelance | Arc.dev | $60–100+/hr for LLM developers | $9,600–$16,000+ |
| Vetted platform | Proxify | From $33.90/hr | From $5,424 |
| Nearshore staff augmentation | BEON.tech | $6,000–$8,000/mo, senior, all-inclusive | $6,000–$8,000 |
| Nearshore talent platform | Revelo | $7,200–$10,700/mo, senior, all-in | $7,200–$10,700 |

Compare what’s inside each number, not just the number. Hourly freelance rates usually leave out benefits, equipment and paid time off, and sometimes platform fees too. An all-inclusive monthly rate should cover salary, benefits, equipment and compliance, so get the list in writing. A recruiter’s placement fee comes on top of the salary you’ll pay.
Questions to ask before you sign
- Who is the engineer’s legal employer, and in which country?
- Does the contract assign the engineer’s work and IP to you?
- What does it cost to convert the engineer to full time, and when does that fee drop?
- If the engineer leaves, how fast is the replacement and who pays for it?
- How many hours a day will the engineer overlap with your core team?
- How did the vendor test LLM-specific skills, and can you see the evidence?
- How is access to production data and model keys granted, and how is it revoked at the end?
How we evaluated these companies
We included only companies that publish a current offering for hiring AI engineers. Turing was excluded because its page no longer offers one. So were firms that only recruit AI leaders.
For each company we read its own service pages for the hiring model, pricing and AI scope. Reputation came from Clutch, G2 and Trustpilot, and we read the review text, noting whether reviewers were clients or talent. All checks were made on October 19, 2026, and ratings and prices change, so confirm them before signing.
The companies are grouped by model rather than ranked. Clutch lists minimum project sizes of $50,000 or more for several of them, including BEON.tech, BairesDev, Toptal and Index.dev. Those minimums describe project engagements and may not apply to individual placements. BEON.tech publishes this guide and is described with the same criteria and sources as everyone else.

The bottom line
The companies in this guide differ less in talent quality than in who employs the engineer, how they bill and how long the relationship is designed to last. Freelance networks buy you speed. Staff augmentation buys you continuity and a full-time teammate, without building employment infrastructure in another country. Recruiters give you an employee of your own. If you’d rather compare talent platforms across every role, not just AI, see our roundup of the best platforms to hire tech talent.
